The polygonal basin is Gothic from which a high Renaissance construction emerges. On the top there is the statue of St John made by Quercia. The bronze reliefs and the statues in the niches are the works of Quercia, Donatello and Ghiberti. In the works that followed the statues in the Baptistry of Siena - among them the Tombstone of Bishop Giovanni Pecci in the Cathedral of Siena - Donatello returned to the flattened relief, pushing its expressive possibilities to the utmost limits.
